The only color photograph from Janusz Korczak's orphanage.

This photo is likely to be hand-colored. Check the color on the faces of the girls and the paint on their dresses.

The photo was donated to GFH* by Izak Skalka, one of the former pupils of Korczak's orphanage.

Description of the photo in the archives file:
Five youngsters from Janusz Korczak's orphanage in Warsaw.Photographed on May 13, 1934, in Goclawek, a place where children from the orphanage went for summer camp programs. In the photo: Szmulek, Szloyme, Paulina, and Edzia (surnames unknown).

This photo is likely to be hand-colored, a method of manually adding colour to a black and white photo. Different types of paints, typically, watercolours or pastels, were used.
By close examination of the surface of the hand-colored photos, it is relatively easy to define the method and the type of paint. Here, I just used enlarged photos from the GFH archives to establish the way of coloring. One can see that the red color is applied just to the middle of the girls' dresses and is very similar on all the children's faces, showing exactly the same type of coloring of the cheeks.
