PIOTR’S STORY
Lena Kichler found little Piotr in the Warsaw Ghetto in the autumn of 1942.
She smuggled him and four other children out of the ghetto in potato sacks.
She arranged for the children to be placed in the orphanage of the cloister of Father Baudouin in Warszawa.
Later ( possibly in August 1944) the children in this orphanage were evacuated from Warszawa to the orphanage of the Bublai cloister near Zakopane.
Here Lena Kichler redeemed Piotr and four other children, on the eve of the departure of her orphanage,
from Zakopane in March 1946. The children were then brought through Prague, Czechoslovakia to France. In France, the children stayed three months at Combault and then three years in Belville near Paris. Piotr immigrated to Israel in 1949 together with the other children. He lives in northern Israel.
The name Piotr might or might not be his real name.
The name Korczak is probably different from his real name.
So here we have a little boy from Ghetto Warsaw, born around 1941.
CAN YOU HELP US?
Look at his face! Do you see a family resemblance?

Here, third from the right stands Rózka Korczak. She was born in 1921 in Poland and joined the “movement” upon the outbreak of World War II. She was active in Ha-Shomer ha-Za’ir and took leadership in the United Partisan Organization, smuggling weapons into the Vilna Ghetto and helping Jews escape. She was among the last of the fighters to leave the ghetto in September 1943, carrying the movement’s archives on her back. After Vilna was liberated, Korczak immigrated to Palestine and integrated into kibbutz life. She ran Moreshet, an institute established to engage in research and publication of literature and Holocaust scholarship. |
Three Korczak: Icek (29/3/1948), Mordchai (18/8/1948) and Zipora (14/5/1946).
Three Korczaki: Twice Icek from Cyprus on 5/2/1949 and Kopel on Negba from France 11/3/1949 which may be of interest... and one Korczash: Mordechai 15/3/1947. All of them were born after WWII. Of course, the name Korczak was carried both by the Poles and the Jews. Janusz Korczak was the pseudonim of Henryk (Hersz) Goldszmit.
