The Pain of Mathematics - Cattle wagons from Umschlagplatz in Warsaw to Treblinka - Deutsche Reichsbahn - Wagenzug bestehende aus 1C 58G 1C (60) - Warschau nach Treblinka

Dimensions of the railway car of type 1C (with cabin outside) on the photo below: Total length of the interior space for deportees 8 meters. Total height interior space for deportees (ceiling curves down from the middle): 2.2 meters at the center; and 2.1 meters at the sides.Total width interior space for deportees: 2.7 meters.

Dimensions of the railway car of type 1C (with cabin outside) next last wagon on the photo: Total length of the interior space for deportees 8 meters. Total height interior space for deportees (ceiling curves down from the middle): 2.2 meters at the center; and 2.1 meters at the sides.Total width interior space for deportees: 2.7 meters. The sizes varied as this type of wagons were produced during30 years span at different factories.

1 C cattle wagon of 29 sq. m.

1 G cattle wagon of 21. 3 sq. m. This wagon was earlier within the Polish company PKP.

1 G cattle wagon (box car) of 29 sq. m.

The Pain of Mathematics. While starting out to write a post about box cars, cattle wagons and the number of peoples that were loaded in each, I feel bad!

The Mathematics of the deportations from Umschlagplatz are, however, rather easy.

We know, exactly the number of persons that were deported each day from Umschlagplatz to Treblinka and we know as well that the set of wagons was always 60.

On the day Janusz Korczak and Dom Sierot was deported, 6,623 persons were deported. 6623 divided by 60 gives the quotient of approx. 110 persons in each wagon.

110 persons with parcels in one wagon means an area of 50x40 cm to stan on per person. My own measures are approx. 70 x 40. Sometimes more than 150 persons were loaded to each wagon.

Dimensions of the railway car of type 1C (with cabin outside) as on some of the photos:
Total length of the interior space for deportees 8 meters.
Total height interior space for deportees (ceiling curves down from the middle): 2.2 meters at the center; and 2.1 meters at the sides.
Total width interior space for deportees: 2.7 meters.
According to the factory writing on the boxcar the area was 27 sq. meters.
Other cattle wagons were about 21 sq. meters (7 x 3 m).
From the Face book:
  • Helena R Brus Although sad, It would be very educational to install a demonstration of what it means in practice - perhaps in one of Holocaust museums.
    1
  • Roman Wroblewski This is exactly what I suggested. In Washington there is on exhibit one of the cattle wagons. However, it is used just for the passing through. It should be enough to paint on the floor the size of the wagon and let children in a school class of 30 pupils to stand within the area of 1/4 or 1/5 of the cattle wagon. To make it more natural, different parcels that the victims were allowed to take with them, might be placed within the marked floor. It should be installed in all Holocaust museums.
