The idea of the Middle Room - POKÓJ ŚRODKOWY at Janusz Korczak´s Orphanage was inspired by him from the Summer camps of Wilhelmówka and Michałówka, where he worked while studying medicine. In Michałówka, there was a room for the "dozorca", a counselor between two bedrooms, accommodating 30 children each. This particular room had two internal windows heading two bedrooms. The idea was, like later at Korczak's Orphanage, to watch the children and assist them, if needed, during the night. Likely, there were not just the internal windows, but also the doors that entered from the counsellor's room to both bedrooms. Sometimes in the evenings counsellor played music in his room with open doors so music could be heard in both girls' and boys' bedrooms.
The sleeping quarters at Korczak´s summer camp in Gocławek were similarly remodeled. Through the open door of a small room adjacent to the large bedroom, the teacher on duty could observe all the sleeping children, as well as those who woke up at night to urinate in a bucket placed at the entrance to the bedroom.
POKÓJ ŚRODKOWY, or Middle Room, was the room between the girls' and boys' bedrooms where Bursa students, counsellors, and occasionally also Janusz Korczak slept. I found this particular description in Jakub Kutalczuk's writings. "Pan Jakub is asking: How often should curtains be changed in the middle room?".
