The Secret Geopolitical Alliance and the British Blindspot (July 1946 – January 1947) - Kielce and Trelleborg - 80 years.

This extraordinary, rare photograph from July 30, 1946, serves as a textbook testament to one of the most fascinating and tightly concealed chapters of post-war European history. It captures Major Michał Wróblewski (Pan Misza), second from the right, alongside Major Michał Rudawski (both Jewish) and a fellow officer, Major Chorabik of the Polish Army, near the Polish-Czechoslovak border, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Luba Geller—an operative of the legendary, underground Zionist organization Irgun Ha-Bricha.

To fully grasp the immense weight of this image, one must contextualize it within the global geopolitical arena of 1946. Great Britain was the pivotal antagonist in this puzzle. Operating under the Mandate for Palestine, the British government drastically restricted legal Jewish immigration to the Middle East, seeking at all costs to block the post-war exodus from Europe. The diplomatic pressure exerted by London on European governments was monumental. Consequently, the Bricha (Hebrew for "flight") operation—despite being orchestrated and supported by the Polish authorities—had to remain strictly semi-secret and deeply covert.

The Ambassador in Poland (Lane) to the Secretary of State

WARSAW July 25, 1946—5 p.m.

[Received August 4—8:50 a.m.] 1144.

1. Embassy has evidence Jews now leaving Poland illegally in great numbers via the Czechoslovak frontier, with the ultimate destination American zone, Germany. Rate prior to Kielce pogrom approximately 70 per week. Rate now 700 per day. Evidence indicates numbers involved may total 100,000.
2. According to an eyewitness account by Mary Gibbons, UNRRA Deputy Director General for Health, Welfare and Repatriation, who has just visited Czechoslovakia, Jews cross the frontier with the connivance Polish and Czechoslovak border guards and are transported by Czechoslovak railway to Bratislava. Here Soviets facilitate transit to the American zone Austria, and US military authorities, in Austria, sent them on to Germany.
3. JDC assists with food and other help in Czechoslovakia. Apparently, Jews so arriving all well provided with money.
Detailed information follows by air.

Repeated to Berlin as 181; Vienna as 21; London as 153.

This created an unprecedented paradox within the post-war Polish state apparatus. Only a designated faction of the government and the Polish military, which directly secured and coordinated the transports, was aware of the mass movement of Jewish survivors across the borders. The entire operation was completely hidden from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MSZ). The MSZ had to officially maintain clean diplomatic relations with Great Britain and could not afford to be accused on the international stage of violating British mandatory blockades. Thus, the military and tight government circles conducted their own secret humanitarian policy right behind the backs of their own diplomats.

The conspiracy was so meticulously executed that the British government only discovered the operation when a massive wave of Polish Jews literally flooded Prague and other cities in Czechoslovakia. This sudden, overwhelming influx of refugees in the heart of Central Europe confronted London with a fait accompli, forcing British intelligence to realize they had been completely blindsided by a highly effective, underground migration network - see the telegram above.

This exact same operational blueprint of tactical evasion was utilized just a few months later, in January 1947, in Sweden. A large group of former concentration camp prisoners from Bergen-Belsen, who had been recovering in Sweden thanks to UNRRA action (White Boats), were organized to board a ship in the port of Trelleborg bound for Haifa. To protect itself from British diplomatic fury, the Swedish government, together with Jewish organizations, masterfully orchestrated the Ulua boat departure to ensure the refugees had absolutely no official ties to Sweden once they boarded the ship. They were all provided with genuine Polish national passports in which their Swedish residence visas had conveniently expired, alongside a fabricated, collective visa for Cuba. When (if) the British intercepted the ship, Sweden held total plausible deniability.

The applicant, who belongs to the contingent of
600 Jews, who through the care of the Jewish Refugees Wel-
fare Society have been provided the opportunity to emigrate to Cuba
during October 1946, has received the following stamped
in his/her passport:
"Unrestrained departure before 31/10 1946. Does not entitle
the holder to receive rationing cards."
Any identity document previously issued to the applicant,
if any, has not been requested for return.

According to the documents in the Swedish National Archives, a special stamp was in use for the travelers' national passports, saying:"Unimpeded departure before 31/10/1946. Does not entitle the bearer to receive a ration card", indicating that the person would have left the country by the end of October 1946 and did not need a ration card. This clearly indicates that the trip had been planned before October 1946.

My father, Michał Wróblewski (Pan Misza), and Major Michał Rudawski, who had survived the horrors of the war (read Holocaust) and lost their immediate families, saw this silent service on the border as deeply personal. Standing there in uniforms as a Major of the Polish Army, they were active players in a high-stakes game of espionage and statecraft. By bending the laws and opening the border gates quietly, these officers successfully defied the British Empire and paved the way to freedom for thousands of Holocaust survivors.
