The Holocaust victims buried in the Northern Cemetery in Stockholm (Norra Begravningsplatsen), on the other hand, died in Sweden as they were receiving medical treatment for the injuries and illnesses sustained in Nazi concentration camps. And yet their presence has gone - and continues to go - neglected and unrecognized, and most of our appeals for financial support to correct this remain unanswered or have been rejected as by the Mayor of the City Hall. |
Tori Van Orden Martinez wrote at the Face book Föreningen för Janusz Korczaks Levande Arv and Swedish Holocaust Memorial Association. |
"Many of you have undoubtedly read the news that Sweden is soon to have three Holocaust memorial "stumbling stones" (Stolpersteine) - the country's first - placed in Stockholm. Some 70,000 of these small brass plates embedded in stones have already been placed in streets around Europe to designate the last known freely chosen residence of individuals who became victims of the Nazis.
According to the articles written on this news (for instance: https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2Fy6lvgsw3&h=AT0wLEf5WGyzTFaE7vIQQXkxNcKUp0JoyAP8ckmfO1QN0bjzTPumpn4VOqXshMMmomoUfdE1tzbMGNKxpShVDhn39eM_t5sG2lXyWNiXwdsMTff3FHwd0DxQQcXrFlzJdBB8oe8Jo5mZd1-SS2M7EQ), "the [three] stones will be placed at locations in Stockholm where three men had lived after finding refuge in the city... The men were later deported and killed." Any recognition/memorialization of the victims of the Nazi genocide is a positive thing, of course, and we support such initiatives.
For Roman Wroblewski, Justyna Bamba, Daniel Kraus and myself, however, it is frustrating that while an estimated 1 million Swedish crowns has been dedicated to these three stones, we have garnered very little financial or other support for the restoration of the approximately 100 graves of Holocaust victims buried in Stockholm's Northern Jewish Cemetery and the placement of a suitable memorial at the site. Roman has written a blog post related to the Swedish stumbling stones (in Swedish; attached to this post:https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2Fyxt384m7&h=AT08MqZUFnquehknOD2rEYIZANFTN-9C7mwnqhMjfmNzKY2GGASEK0KGW5izrTAAnYZGE4glGk1ElUlFhEskKgzmNxh4ca6wr1AuJEA5zyWlJeFFHqRgMHeVvMubCZGMPz6l6DL7sGc6Kg6vp-TXBg) in which he notes that none of the victims for whom the stumbling blocks are being placed were deported from Sweden, meaning their murders at the hands of the Nazis did not have a direct correlation with Sweden.

Although the Swedish stumbling stones are different from the original ones, Demnig is going to come to Stockholm and install them himself for 3 000 Swedish Crowns each. Here he is not feeling that Stockholms stumbling stones are plagiarism. In Holland, however, Demning tried to prevent installation of the stones similar to his.
It is the Apeldoorn Memorial Cobblestones Association, an organization recently established by volunteers, has chosen a cheaper alternative, made of marble- Stockholm City is going to pay 60 000 Sw kr for the installation and of course the cost of the hotel and similar. Total cost most probably over 1 000 000 Sw kr. For 3 fake stumbling stones.
