In the shadow of the spire - Janusz Korczaks Dom Sierot - Orphans' Home



Here, on the right of the shadow of the spire of PEKIN - Culture Palace, was the last seat of the Dom Sierot - Orphans Home run by Janusz Korczak. The building was at 16 Sienna Street. The second entrance to the orphanage was from the 9 Śliska street. The building of the Dom Sierot was very close to the place of the current statue of Janusz Korczak and the children - O.

X at the picture is current Emilia Plater Street. Before WWII at this place was an outbuilding to number 3 Twarda street where my mother, her two sisters and their parents (my grandparents) lived.

In the final period of the Little Ghetto, Sienna street was on this stretch the border of the ghetto.

The building was at 16 Sienna Street. The second entrance to the orphanage was from the 9 Śliska street. The building was very close to place of the current statue of Janusz Korczak and the children - O. The church with a blue-green roof at Plac Grzybowski is visible at the bottom of the picture.

Bird view by Luftwaffe taken during Warsaw Uprise in August 1944 of the area around Sienna and Śliska Street. Korczaks Orphanage was at number 16 Sienna and 9 Śliska. The house at corner of Wielka and Sienna street was bombarded in September 1939. Efterwards children were using it as a hill for winther activities. There was a wall at Wielka str and thereafter a fence along Sienna street: Mary Berg lived at Sienna str.

The building at 16 Sienna Street/9 Śliska str is the one from where the deportation to Umschlagsplatz and thereafter to to the death camp Treblinka took place on August 5th 1942. Nr. 16  Sienna is marked with a star. On the street two wagons of horse tram are present (so called Konhelerki).

Picture on the bottom-right is Śliska street and the gate through which the deportation of the Orphanage to Umschlagsplatz and thereafter to to the death camp Treblinka, took place on August 5th 1942. Picture on the left shows the view of the building when it was just build.

The very last view of 16 Sienna street during the construction of PEKiN - Culture Palace in Warszawa, The picture is taken in 1952, just before it was turned down to give place for the Palace of Culture - a gift from Soviet Union and comrade Stalin!

Memorial plaque at Lalka - children theatre commemorating the last seat of Dom Sierot that was run by Janusz Korczak. The place of the last seat is not exactly there. Lalka theatre is at 11 Sienna street. The spot of the Korczak monument is at the the building 13A Pańska street.
