Why American Religious Jews from New York desecrated the Holocaust memorial dedicated to Dr. Janusz Korczak and the Destruction of the European Jews? A statue of Dr. Janusz Korczak and the Children was placed in such a prominent place at Madison Avenue to be a reminder of his greatness and the tasks left to us.

It is about the memorial at Madison Avenue that consisted of three panels on the façade of the education building of the Park Avenue Synagogue. It was dedicated to the fate of Jewish children who perished in the Holocaust. This Holocaust Memorial was easily seen when approaching the building from 5th Avenue. 

16 stone blocks with the description TO THE SACRED MEMORY OF THE MILLION JEWISH CHILDREN WHO PERISHED IN THE HOLOCAUST* were taken away which makes two reliefs, now placed in the shadow of trees at 87 E Street, anonymous.

The action of Park Avenue Synagogue which previously had several members that were Holocaust survivors resulted however in three new windows at the Educational building with a nice view of Madison Avenue.

Through this action, the bonds of American Jews with European history and with the Holocaust are hidden.  Also hidden, is the history of the fate of over 1 000 000 Jewish children. Most of them were murdered by suffocation in the gas chambers. Among them were 239 children, dr. Janusz Korczak and staff of the Dom Sierot orphanage. They were deported from Warsaw Ghetto on August 5th and sent in cattle cars to Treblinka death camp.

“My words are of stone and bronze – silent but everlasting,” said Nathan Rapoport, an outstanding creator of Holocaust memorials. But he was wrong! His Holocaust Memorial at Madison Avenue was just demolished and the fate of stones with words is unknown. Even the highest representatives of Par Avenu Synagogue had no slightest idea what happened to the stones with "words": TO THE SACRED MEMORY OF THE MILLION JEWISH CHILDREN WHO PERISHED IN THE HOLOCAUST.

*  One stone with זכור (Remember) was left. Maybe to remember this obvious desecration! According to the law, the Monument can not be removed from its present location. It can not be divided or reinstalled in a different way as the artist, the donators, and the owners of the building agreed.
The Monument should be therefore promptly reinstalled, exactly in the way it was before.
