| Janusz Korczak´s novel Dzieci ulicy ("Street Children") was first published in 17 episodes, serialized from December 1900 to April 12, 1901, in the weekly magazine Czytelnia dla Wszystkich ("Reading Room for Everyone"). In pre-war Poland, newspapers and weeklies often included supplements. These were sometimes calendars at the end of the year, or serialized novel sheets distributed before the book was printed as a single, complete volume. Janusz Korczak’s debut novel, Dzieci ulicy ("Street Children"), was printed using this exact method. Before being published as a full book, it appeared in installments (in the form of print sheets) as a supplement to the weekly magazine Czytelnia dla Wszystkich ("Reading Room for Everyone"). |
On May 22, 1901, Russian Censorship allowed the printing of the first Korczak book, Dzieci ulicy.

| Part of the book (Page 25 bottom) describes the departure of the children from Warsaw to the country, first by horse-drawn carriage and thereafter by train: A carriage is waiting in the gateway. They got in. The doors were slammed shut. For all the treasures in the world, Antek would not admit that a shiver of fear ran through his limbs. The boy was only twelve years old. What will happen now? They drove through a wide street, brightly lit. Again, they entered dark streets. Then they crossed an iron bridge. A golden snake of riverside lanterns was reflected, swaying in the waves of the river. The city drew its black contours against the background of the dark sky. The wheels of the carriage clattered loudly against the iron pavement of the bridge. Then Praga, a park on the left side, low houses, empty squares, some buildings, a square, a brick factory building, and fences. |
